Code for America Voluntarily Recognizes CfA Workers United Union

Code for America and CfA Workers United are pleased to announce that we have reached a voluntary recognition agreement effective October 22, 2021.

“This important milestone in Code for America’s history will increase our ability to create a government that works for the people, by the people in the digital age. This has been a learning journey for our organization, and we arrived where we are today, with voluntary recognition, because of our strong commitment to delivering on our mission and staying true to our values,” said Amanda Renteria, CEO of Code for America. “As we look to the future, we will ensure that Code for America continues to be a special place to work, where every member of our team knows they are seen and supported, and where there is a steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as we fulfill our mission of making government work better for everyone.”

A spokesperson from CfA Workers United, affiliated with OPEIU Tech Workers Union Local 1010, said, “We are excited to form one of the first unions in civic tech here at Code for America. We look forward to working together with CfA management to continue building a culture at the organization that empowers all employees to show up to work as their full selves, each and every day. Having workers included in the decision-making process around policies that affect them will allow us to better act out our values of listening first, including those who have been excluded, and acting with intention. We have a shared commitment to improving worker well-being, promoting a workplace that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive, and respecting healthy conflict. We are eager to act out our values internally and externally, ensuring the sustainability of Code for America’s work far into the future.”

Since CfA Workers United informed Code for America leadership of the request for voluntary recognition on August 2, Code for America’s leadership and CfA Workers United have worked together in good faith towards voluntary recognition with the intention of delivering on our mission, ensuring an operational structure for impact, and staying true to Code for America’s values.

Voluntary recognition will be finalized pending the card check. Code for America and CfA Workers United look forward to negotiating our first unionized contract.
